So, the Maynarkh-vs-Tau battle was as much of a blast as I’d hoped, in several unexpected ways…
The mission was Crusade, the deployment type Hammer and Anvil. My opponent won the roll-off, and we set up. My plan was for my close-combat Overlord and his squad to corner his HQ and Riptide and mulch them, while my Night Shroud bomber rockets out of reserve and destroys everything else. His plan involved his troops painting my stuff with markerlights, and his Riptide, Sky Ray gunship (the Lego A-wing), and those two Broadside suits that look suspiciously like Wraithguard hammer me to bits.
Turn 1 begins, his army scoots forward and shoots, I run into the line of fire…
…and at the start of Turn 2, I’m a little singed, and have little to show for it. The Flayed Ones in the far left (proxied by Heroscape figures) at least killed a squad of Fire Warriors, before getting obliterated. I move my Destroyers and Tomb Blades up, so they can–
Explode? No, wait, I…crap. Well. Turn 3. My still-whole warrior squad crouches behind cover, and my Overlord and his mauled squad scramble for the ruins. The Riptide moves up, markerlights get laid out, and those
Wraithguard infiltrators Broadsides continue to bombard my forces. My Night Shroud bomber (B-2 model) comes out of reserve and hurtles across the battlefield, tesla destructors crackling…
…and kills a total of two Fire Warriors. Okay. He’s still got five S10 AP1 large blast bombs, surely those will do something.
Turn 4. My Overlord’s squad is down to two warriors. My other squad is getting picked apart by various foes. The Night Shroud performs a bombing run, drops a bomb on the Riptide, battlesuits, and Pathfinder squad…and it scatters off. Must’ve done something, though, because the Tau’s subsequent shooting is abysmal.
Turn 5. My Overlord’s squad is finished off; he can’t hold his objective. Furious at having his plans ruined, he picks a fight with the Riptide:
He wounds the Riptide once with his warscythe, and…aw nuts, fails his save and loses his last wound. At least he died fighting.
End of Turn 5, we roll and the game ends. Final score: Necrons have First Blood and one objective; he has Slay the Warlord and one objective. Tie game. I am satisfied, and have a new (grudging) respect for Tau firepower.
